Developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and later at Texas A&M University, the SMP foams are a new approach to inducing blood clots at the treatment site.

The porous polymeric foam is formulated to have “memory” properties, allowing it to transition between pre-set shapes at different temperatures and aqueous environments.  The SMP foam is constructed in its original expanded shape, then compressed into a secondary shape to allow for catheter delivery.

Once delivered into the blood vessel, the SMP foam recovers its original expanded shape.

As low-density polyurethane, SMP foam formulation and pore sizes can be modified to create materials with a wide range of different properties.
